Why using a fan at night can disrupt your sleep

People who get a lot of sleep often make those who struggle to sleep feel jealous, as they can only wish for a peaceful night’s rest.

If you want to wake up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle your day, there’s an easy solution that can help you achieve a deep and restful sleep.

Keep reading to discover the secret to becoming someone who loves hitting the snooze button!

For some, getting enough sleep is the ultimate goal, while others see it as just something they have to do until the next day comes.

However, sleep is essential for our bodies to function well. It’s not just about the number of hours you spend sleeping; it’s also about how good that sleep is and how well it helps your body and mind recover.

Experts say that most adults should get about seven to nine hours of sleep every night to keep their brains alert and their moods happy.

Not getting enough good sleep can lead to serious health problems like heart disease, diabetes, and depression. Plus, not sleeping well can make your immune system weaker, which means you could get sick more easily.

Balance

Sleep quality depends on a variety of factors, but one often overlooked aspect is room temperature. The temperature of your environment can significantly affect how well you sleep and your ability to stay asleep through the night.

It’s important to find the perfect mix of warm and cool temperatures so your body can relax and get the rest it needs instead of working hard all night to stay comfortable.

If it’s too hot, you might find it hard to fall asleep and stay asleep because your body is trying to cool down.

On the other hand, if it’s too cold, your muscles might tighten up, which can make it tough to settle into a deep sleep.

Furthermore, when you are shivering or feeling cold in bed, your sleep will be fragmented as your body works harder to stay warm.

Science and sleep temperature

Experts say that the ideal room temperature for sleep is typically between 60 to 67°F (15 to 19°C) for most people.

As you get ready to sleep, your body’s core temperature naturally goes down, and it goes back up when it’s time to wake up. When the temperature around you matches your body’s cooling process, it helps you get the best deep sleep you need to feel refreshed.

While you’re sleeping, especially during deep sleep and REM sleep, your body can’t control its temperature as well. That’s why if it’s too hot or too cold, it can mess with these important sleep stages.

Melatonin, the hormone that makes you feel sleepy, is also influenced by temperature. A cooler room helps your body produce more melatonin, which tells you it’s time to sleep. That’s why it’s easier to drift off when the room is cool rather than when it’s warm.

Tips to sleep better

Creating the perfect sleep environment involves more than just setting the thermostat. Here are some ways to optimize your bedroom temperature for a good night’s sleep:

  • Bedding and blankets: Breathable materials – like cotton or linen – allows air to circulate, preventing you from overheating during the night. Heavy or synthetic materials like polyester can trap heat and moisture, making it harder to regulate your body temperature.
  • Invest in a quality mattress: Some mattresses can get really hot, making it hard to sleep well. For instance, memory foam mattresses are known for holding onto heat, but the latest versions have cooling gel layers to help with that. It might be a good idea to buy a mattress that allows air to flow and stays cool all night long.
  • Wear comfortable, lightweight sleepwear: The clothes you wear to bed can also affect your body temperature. Breathable fabrics like cotton or moisture-wicking materials are best for maintaining a comfortable sleep temperature. Avoid heavy, insulating PJs unless the room is unusually cold.
  • Avoid using fans: Many people use fans to help control the temperature in their rooms, especially when it gets hot outside. However, fans just circulate the air and don’t actually make the room cooler. On really hot nights, a fan might not be enough to keep you cool, which can make you wake up sweaty and uncomfortable. On the other hand, if the room is already cool, having a fan blowing right at you can make you feel too cold, and you might wake up shivering during the night.

If you’re one of those people who are calmed by the swinging sounds of a fan, here are some alternatives that will not impact your room’s temperature.

  • White noise machine: These gadgets make relaxing noises like rain, wind, or ocean waves, helping to create a peaceful atmosphere that can improve your sleep. If you have a voice-activated assistant at home, you can tell it to play sleep sounds for a set amount of time.
  • Humidifier or purifier: If you’re worried about dryness, a humidifier can help by putting moisture back into the air. This can stop the drying effect that fans might have. Plus, both humidifiers and fans are usually quieter, which can help you sleep better.

Sleep is one of the most vital functions of the human body, allowing it to recover, repair, and rejuvenate both mentally and physically. It’s important to prioritize sleep so you can wake up feeling refreshed and recharged!

The devil waits at every crossroads: a walk between darkness and light on Dartmoor

The devil waits at every crossroads: a walk between darkness and light on Dartmoor The new 38-mile Archangel’s Way, a pilgrimage route in a rugged corner of Devon, straddles Christendom and ancient pagan sites T he story of the church of St Michael de Rupe begins – as all the best Dartmoor stories do – on a dark and stormy night. A sailor, stricken in a wild and furious sea, fell to the deck of his ship to pray for salvation. The almighty unveiled a mountain in the midst of the tempest where the ship duly made landfall: in gratitude the sailor built a church on its summit. The devil – who had unleashed that evil storm – did his best to prise the church from its foundations, but Archangel Michael sprung to its defence and became the patron of this Devon parish. The tale has many versions, but this is the general gist. Today, St Michael de Rupe counts as the highest working church in southern England – poised dramatically on top of a western outlier of Dartmoor’s tor...

How to Make a DIY Carboard RC Plane (1-10)

How to Make a DIY Carboard RC Plane Hello, fellow makers!👋  I'm excited to share my latest project with you—building a remote-controlled airplane from cardboard.✈️ As an RC enthusiast who loves drones and everything related to remote-controlled vehicles, I always wanted to create my own plane, but I was put off by the high costs and complexity of traditional materials. So, I decided to take a different approach and use readily available and affordable materials like cardboard. However, I was initially hesitant because I wasn't sure if a plane made of cardboard would actually fly. But after doing some research and putting my design skills to the test, I decided to go for it. 🛠️ In this instructable, I'll guide you through the process of building a sturdy and functional RC airplane using a cardboard fuselage and wings, along with a few 3D-printed parts and the electronics. This project was not only fun and educational but also incredibly rewarding. I learned a...

Did you know that if your ear hairs grow, it is because your body is

Did you know that if your ear hairs grow, it is because your body is Ear hair growth is a natural part of aging for many people. As we get older, hormonal changes can lead to an increase in hair growth in certain areas, including the ears. This is often due to changes in testosterone levels, which can stimulate hair follicles in the ear. Additionally, genetics can play a role in how much ear hair a person develops. While some people may notice only a little hair growth, others might experience more significant growth. It’s a normal process, but if the hair becomes bothersome, there are grooming options available to manage it. It’s also interesting to note that some people might be more prone to this due to their family history. If you notice it becoming a bit much, there are safe ways to manage it, like trimming or using specialized grooming tools. Just make sure to be careful when doing so! Ear hair growth is a common phenomenon, especially as people age. Th...
