Police Say Goodbye to Beloved K9 Officer Zeus

A Final Ride

As Zeus was wheeled through the crowd of fellow officers and service members who had gathered to pay their respects, emotions ran high. One officer, visibly moved, fought back tears as he spoke: “It’s with tears in our eyes that we must say goodbye. He wore the Ridgefield police badge with respect, pride, and dignity.”

This was more than a goodbye; it was the end of a chapter that had seen Zeus serve his community with distinction and bravery.

A Heroic Canine

Zeus wasn’t just a police dog — he was a hero. During his career, he was an indispensable asset to the Ridgefield Police Department, assisting in hundreds of arrests and executing over 50 successful tracks to find missing persons or suspects on the run. His skill and commitment to the job were extraordinary, and he played a pivotal role in saving lives. He helped locate six individuals in life-threatening situations and contributed to the capture of six fleeing criminals. A true “alpha dog,” Zeus was a trusted and vital member of the police team.

A Heartbreaking Decision

Chief John Roche, deeply affected by the moment, shared his thoughts on the difficult decision to say goodbye. “The disease that had racked him had deteriorated him to such a point where it was just so difficult for him to exist and continue on,” he explained. The decision, though agonizing, was made to prevent further suffering. Zeus had been battling a severe degenerative hip disorder, and his health declined rapidly after his retirement from active duty, making the heartbreaking decision a necessity.

Never Forgotten

Zeus’s passing leaves a profound void, but his legacy will never be forgotten. The Ridgefield Police Department took to social media to honor his memory, posting a heartfelt message on Facebook that reflected on his many accomplishments and the deep affection the department and community held for him. “Zeus was a valued member of our team as well as our community. He will always remain in our thoughts and never be forgotten.”

A Life Well Lived

Zeus’s life was one of unparalleled service, loyalty, and dedication. His days were spent serving his community and supporting the police department with unwavering pride. Few dogs are given the opportunity to serve in such a meaningful way, and it was clear from his passion and commitment that Zeus loved his work. Though his passing is a deep loss, his legacy as a hero will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

To honor his memory, the Ridgefield Police Department shared a touching video of Zeus’s final ride, a tribute to a brave K9 officer who will always be remembered as a true hero.

Please SHARE this tribute to celebrate the life of a faithful companion and honor the memory of a remarkable K9 officer.

The devil waits at every crossroads: a walk between darkness and light on Dartmoor

The devil waits at every crossroads: a walk between darkness and light on Dartmoor The new 38-mile Archangel’s Way, a pilgrimage route in a rugged corner of Devon, straddles Christendom and ancient pagan sites T he story of the church of St Michael de Rupe begins – as all the best Dartmoor stories do – on a dark and stormy night. A sailor, stricken in a wild and furious sea, fell to the deck of his ship to pray for salvation. The almighty unveiled a mountain in the midst of the tempest where the ship duly made landfall: in gratitude the sailor built a church on its summit. The devil – who had unleashed that evil storm – did his best to prise the church from its foundations, but Archangel Michael sprung to its defence and became the patron of this Devon parish. The tale has many versions, but this is the general gist. Today, St Michael de Rupe counts as the highest working church in southern England – poised dramatically on top of a western outlier of Dartmoor’s tor...
